Cooling

Europe's leading cooling solution

Lefdal Mine Datacenter is one of the world’s most energy efficient data centers. Our cooling solution provides a PUE ranging from 1.08 to 1.15 – depending on cooling technology, UPS configuration, and scale of capacity.

[Seawater]

8 degrees seawater for cooling

The heated water returns from the IT area to the heat exchangers where the seawater is heated from 8 C to 20 C. The heated sea water is transported up with the siphon effect and can either be circulated back to the fjord (no additives) or be used in our waste heat program.

Located next to the Nordfjord, our center utilizes year-round seawater at 8 degrees Celsius for cooling. The redundant PE piping system distributes water from 100 m depth in the fjord to the heat exchangers located on Level 3. The water is transported into the facility and out again using the siphon effect. This is a very energy-efficient way to circulate the water between the fjord and the heat exchangers.

The cold seawater interacts with the heat exchangers and cools down the pressurized and redundant closed freshwater circuit from the heat exchangers to the respective customer's IT area. The cold freshwater available at the IT areas is used for all types of known cooling technologies from fan walls and CRAH, to inline cooling, direct liquid cooling, and immersion cooling.

[Capacity]

Low power consumption

The heat exchangers are built out on a modular basis, and each has a 7.5 MW capacity. There are 12 heat exchangers on Level 3 (6 on A side and 6 on B side) supplying a total of 90 MW of cooling capacity. Cooling on the next level will increase to cater for a total of 200 MW redundant capacity.

The cooling capacity is not seasonal and there is no need to utilize secondary or complex additional cooling. This provides a simple, single mode of operation for year-round operations.

The use of cold seawater from the fjord provides low power consumption and has a neglectable effect on the fjord. It thus provides an environmentally friendly method of cooling, both locally and globally.
